Indentometer IDM 800

Determination of oil levels on the skin surface, scalp, and hair

Overview

The Indentometer IDM 800 is a scientific probe designed to assess the mechanical properties of the skin, particularly skin softness and stiffness. Developed by Courage + Khazaka electronic GmbH, it provides objective and quantitative data for evaluating how the skin responds to controlled mechanical pressure.
As part of the Courage + Khazaka MPA system, the Indentometer can be used alongside probes such as the Cutometer®, Frictiometer FR 700 to provide a more complete and quantitative analysis of skin mechanical properties and overall skin condition.

Features

Multiple pin diameters available

Probes are available with 2 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm pin diameters to suit different skin sites and study requirements.

Adaptable measurement depth

With the same applied force, smaller pin diameters penetrate deeper into the skin because of the smaller contact area.

Special scalp firmness probe

A specially shaped probe with a 1 mm pin diameter is available for measuring scalp firmness.

Quick and easy operation

Designed for simple handling and fast measurement results.

Compatible with C+K MPA systems

All Indentometer probes can be connected to compatible Courage + Khazaka MPA systems, including side-by-side configurations.

Ideal complement to elasticity testing

Works as a valuable addition to other skin mechanical measurement methods, such as the Cutometer®.

Easy calibration check

The pin depth can be checked quickly at any time using a dedicated calibration check cap.

Technology

The measurement is based on the indentation principle. During the test, the probe applies a defined force to the skin surface and measures the skin’s resistance and deformation response. This makes it especially useful for evaluating firmness, softness, stiffness, and changes in skin mechanical behavior.
The shape of the indenter has been deliberately chosen to be cylindrical and not roundish in order to allow absolute constant contact area.

Application

Efficacy testing and claim support

Ideal for evaluating firmness-enhancing products for the skin or scalp, anti-aging formulations, and treatments designed to improve skin mechanical properties.

Cosmetic and dermatological claims

Supports claims such as firmness enhancing, lifting, toning, anti-aging, improves softness such as callus care, and improves stiffness or hardness such as scar tissue assessment.

Dermatological research

Useful in research involving different skin conditions and diseases, including studies related to scleroderma and changes in skin firmness or hardness.

Wound and burn healing research

Applied in clinical research to monitor healing processes and mechanical changes in wound and burn medicine.

Clinical and basic medical research

Can support studies in other medical fields, such as gynecology, diabetes research, and related tissue condition assessments.

Testing on other materials

In addition to skin and scalp, the Indentometer can be used to measure mechanical properties of other surfaces, including textiles, plastics, food, and other materials.

Available Configuration

The Indentometer IDM 800 is connectable to the MPA systems

What does the Indentometer IDM 800 measure?
The Indentometer IDM 800 measures skin mechanical properties, especially softness, stiffness, firmness, and hardness. It provides objective data on how the skin or another surface responds to controlled indentation.
The probe uses the indentation principle. A defined pin applies pressure to the skin or surface, and the device evaluates the indentation depth or resistance response to assess mechanical properties.
Indentometer probes are available with 2 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm pin diameters for different skin sites and study requirements. A specially shaped 1 mm scalp probe is also available for scalp firmness measurement.
The Indentometer can support claims such as firmness enhancing, lifting, toning, anti-aging, improves softness, and improves stiffness or hardness, depending on the product type and study design.
Yes. The Indentometer IDM 800 is compatible with Courage + Khazaka MPA systems and can be used alongside other probes, such as the Cutometer®, for a more complete evaluation of skin mechanical properties.
Yes. The pin depth can be checked quickly and easily at any time using a dedicated calibration check cap, helping verify correct probe performance between regular service checks.
