Revolutionize the way you measure skin and hair color
The Skin-Colorimeter CL 440-Flex is a scientific probe designed to measure and quantify skin & hair color objectively and reproducibly. Developed by Courage + Khazaka electronic GmbH, it provides reliable color data for cosmetic research, dermatology studies, clinical testing, product development, and claim substantiation.
The CL 440-Flex measures skin color using standardized color values, helping researchers evaluate changes in brightness, skin color, skin tone uniformity, and treatment response. It is especially useful for studies involving brightening products, anti-redness formulations, sunscreens, tanning products, dermatological treatments, and cosmetic procedures.
With its flexible probe design, the CL 440-Flex is suitable for measurements on different body areas and curved or difficult-to-access skin sites. It allows fast, non-invasive assessment of skin color changes before and after product application or treatment.
As part of the Courage + Khazaka MPA system, the Skin-Colorimeter CL 440-Flex can be combined with other probes such as the Mexameter®, Glossymeter GL200, to provide a more complete and quantitative analysis of skin tone and appearance.

Specially developed to detect even small colour changes close to the skin surface, making it ideal for comparison studies.

Uses modern electronics and LEDs with high CRI for accurate and reliable color measurement.

Includes 13 mm and 7 mm illumination tips for measuring larger areas, small spots, lesions, nails, lips, hair, and other materials.

Overlapping light spots help indicate the exact measurement area as the probe approaches the skin

Provides results in approximately 1 second.

Calculates Individual Typology Angle (ITA) to classify skin colour from very light to dark using L* and b* values.
The Skin-Colorimeter CL 440-Flex uses white high-CRI LED light arranged circularly to uniformly illuminate the skin surface. The emitted light interacts with the skin’s translucent layers, where part of the light is absorbed, scattered, and reflected back to the probe.
The reflected light is measured by the probe and processed as raw XYZ colour values. These values are corrected using a special colour matrix to provide results as close as possible to standard colour values.
The measured colour can be displayed in different colour spaces, including RGB and CIELAB L*a*b*. In the L*a*b* system:
The system also automatically calculates the Individual Typology Angle (ITA°) from L* and b*, helping classify skin colour from very light to dark.

Designed to objectively measure changes in skin and hair colour for research, product testing, and before-and-after comparisons.

Suitable for evaluating self-tanners, make-up, whitening/brightening products, decorative cosmetics, patch testing, hair products, and carotene food supplements.

With the conical measuring tip, it can precisely measure small areas such as pigmented spots, lesions, nails, lips, and small animal skin.

Supports claims such as sun protection, brightening, skin tone correction, soothing, anti-irritation, anti-pollution, self-tanning, color protection, concealing, anti-aging, and against dark spots or age spots.

Can also be used to measure color changes on materials such as plants, fruits, metal, tissue, and other surfaces.
Available as a stand-alone device or connectable to MPA systems. The Colorimeter CL 400, the previous version, is available as a wireless probe.

Yes. The CL 440-Flex automatically calculates ITA° — Individual Typology Angle from L* and b* values. ITA helps classify skin colour from very light to dark and is useful in skin colour analysis and UV-related studies.
It is commonly used for cosmetic and pharmaceutical efficacy testing, including self-tanners, make-up, brightening products, patch testing, decorative cosmetics, hair products, and colour-related claim substantiation.

Yes. The accuracy of the Skin-Colorimeter CL 440-Flex can be checked easily at any time using the appropriate calibration check tool or procedure.
To maintain accuracy, reliability, and traceability, the CL 440-Flex should also be calibrated by the manufacturer every 2 years. Regular calibration helps support quality control, study consistency, and claim substantiation requirements.
