FricTest®

Symptomatic Dermography

Overview

FricTest® 4.0 is a validated and easy-to-use dermographometer designed to support the diagnosis of symptomatic dermographism, also known as urticaria factitia or dermographic urticaria. It helps clinicians and researchers evaluate skin response, determine trigger thresholds, and monitor disease activity in patients with inducible urticaria.

The device features a comb-like design with four prongs of different lengths, allowing four levels of dermal stimulation to be applied at the same time. These provocation levels range from Level I, the weakest stimulation, to Level IV, the strongest stimulation.

During testing, FricTest® is placed vertically on the skin so that all four tips touch the surface. It is then stroked once with moderate pressure across the volar forearm or the patient’s back over a distance of approximately 6 cm.

A positive response is identified by the development of a palpable wheal of 3 mm or more in width within approximately 10 minutes after provocation. A positive reaction to the longest tip, corresponding to provocation Level IV, supports the presence of symptomatic dermographism.

Features

Diagnostic support

Helps confirm the diagnosis of symptomatic dermographism, also known as dermographic urticaria or urticaria factitia.

Trigger threshold assessment

Allows evaluation of the patient’s trigger threshold and supports monitoring of disease activity.

Four provocation levels

The four-pronged design provides different stimulation levels in one application.

Recommended test sites

Suitable for testing on the volar forearm or the back.

Quick test reading

The skin response is evaluated 10 minutes after provocation.

Clear positive result criteria

A test is considered positive when a palpable wheal of ≥ 3 mm width is observed.

Suitable for healthcare use

Designed for use by healthcare professionals and, where appropriate, trained patients

Application

Diagnosis of symptomatic dermographism

Used to help confirm symptomatic dermographism, also known as dermographic urticaria or urticaria factitia.

Trigger threshold evaluation

Helps determine the level of skin stimulation required to produce a reaction, supporting assessment of disease activity.

Patient monitoring over time

Useful for follow-up testing to evaluate changes in skin reactivity and treatment response.

Clinical urticaria assessment

Supports healthcare professionals in evaluating patients with suspected inducible urticaria.

Research and clinical studies

Can be used in studies involving dermographism, urticaria activity, treatment efficacy, and skin response thresholds.

What is FricTest® 4.0 used for?

FricTest® 4.0 is used to help confirm the diagnosis of symptomatic dermographism, also known as dermographic urticaria or urticaria factitia.

FricTest® 4.0 has a comb-like design with four tips of different lengths. When stroked once across the skin, the tips apply four different provocation levels to evaluate skin reactivity.

The recommended test sites are the volar surface of the forearm or the back.

The skin response is typically evaluated 10 minutes after provocation.

A positive result is defined by a palpable wheal of 3 mm or more in width after provocation. A positive response to the strongest provocation level supports the diagnosis of symptomatic dermographism.
